Happy Black History Month
Hey lovely souls, today I'm inviting you into another playlist of Big Mama Mae's Plant-Based Kitchen Volume 1 cookbook, “After Hours”. The beats of yesteryears intertwine to create an experience like no other. The perfect soundtrack to set the mood for late night vibes once the kitchen is officially closed, but you want a little snack or desert in the meantime. This is the playlist to play when those late night cravings kick in.
This handpicked selection of soulful tunes curated with love and care to honor the legacy of the era when the term “Big Mama” was familiar. This era stems back far, but we take this journey to Motown artist to the groovy 80s. As a proud African American millennial, this playlist holds a special place in my heart, representing a bridge between generations and a celebration of our rich musical heritage.
Let's get into a few artists featured in this playlist. We're starting with William DeVaughn serenading us with "Be Thankful for What You Got," setting the tone for a night of gratitude and good vibes. Whenever I listen to this song, it makes me appreciate the 70s — the era I would’ve gladly wished to be apart of. The music in the 70s set the tone for the following decades with natural born swag, style, and finesse woven into every melody and lyric. This era was truly the era where all the best samples of music came from. Iconic and legendary music.
Then there's Chaka Khan, the Queen of funk, empowering us with anthems like "I'm Every Woman" and “Ain’t no body” mixed into the playlist. Listening to Chaka Khan makes me want to wear my hair free and put on my gold high heel boots! Her vocal dynamic is unparalleled. Her voice is a force of strength, effortlessly gliding from velvety smooth lows to soaring, powerful highs with an unmatched intensity and soulfulness. With a vocal range that spans multiple octaves, she commands attention with each note, her raw and emotional energy leaves listeners like myself mesmerized.
Oh, and don't even get me started on The Isley Brothers. I love love love their music. Their smooth harmonies and infectious stylistic grooves have me swaying around the kitchen as if I heard their music for the first time. I had the pleasure of seeing them perform live in concert and it was better than I expected. I remember stepping out of my seat into the aisle so I could do my Chicago style steppin’ to the melodic tunes. I was in pure Isley Brother heaven and no I didn’t want to leave lol. So, I definitely had to add them to this playlist because it was only right.
In Big Mama Mae's kitchen, the "Big Mama Mae’s After Hours" playlist isn't just background noise – it's an essential ingredient that infuses every dish with soul and spirit. It's a reminder of where we come from, a celebration of who we are, and a soundtrack to the memories we're creating with each and every recipe.
So, my fellow soul sisters and brothers, dim the lights, turn up the volume, and let the rhythm of the past guide your culinary journey. Big Mama Mae's After Hours playlist isn't just music – it's a vibe, a vibe that transcends time and space, bringing us together in a symphony of flavors, melodies, and memories that will last a lifetime. Enjoy!
